Oh No! A Dog Food Recall!

Oh No! A Dog Food Recall!

If you are old enough, you might remember the TV show "Lost In Space." There was a robot on the show that would warn the space travelers (one of them being the young son, Will Robinson) of dangerous situations that crossed their path (like that scary looking fellow in the photo). We do not get a robot warning, but we might find out that the dog food we purchased has a problem. And even the best dog food manufacturers can find themselves having to issue a recall notice.

So, how do you find out if there has been a recall on your dog's food? One of the easiest ways is to sign up for email alerts from Dog Food Advisor Dog Food Advisor Alerts. They will automatically send you a notice if there has been a recall (voluntary or mandatory) of dog food or even treats.

Here's an example of the information you will be able to obtain: Blue Buffalo Dog Food Recall Event Number 2 of March 2017

Now, the tricky part is determining if the dog food in your pantry is part of the recall. The manufacturer will issue the recall notice with what they call "lot codes." The lot code typically identifies the manufacturing plant, the date made, the production line, and the time of manufacture. But wait! I threw away the bag so I could store the food in a nice plastic container! That's OK, because you have clipped out the lot code from the original bag and stored it with the food, right? Well, that's what we suggest. If you keep the food in the original bag, then you need not read any further. If not...

It's as simple as cutting out the bag where the lot code is located, putting it in a zip-lock baggie, and storing it with the food. Here are a couple of examples from two different dog food manufacturers:

There you have it. Just clip it and forget it (until you need it!). It's a simple and effective way to keep track of important information about your dog's food, in the unlikely event of a recall.
